Noah Roman | Age: 19 | Human | FC: Freddie Stroma | OPEN

Unlike the rest of Shiver Falls’ newest crop, Noah has an idea of what’s gone on around Ducotta Drive in it’s dark past. A very good idea, in fact - he’s studying it. With a penchant for the dark and dreary, Noah’s highly interested in New England’s most tainted neighborhood. But his interest is much less in the gore and horror of it, and rather, the dark romanticism he’s drawn to thanks to his roots in art, theatrics and literature. But little does he realize upon moving in that the homes are less Ghost and more Amityville. Here’s to hoping he gets his bearings before he becomes a supernatural study subject in the future.

Mise-En-Scene stills from Unofficially Yours (2012) directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina
Background: The two stills are comparisons between how Cess (Angel Locsin) and her mother handles relationships. The first still was almost from the beginning of the film where Cess’ mother was again dumped by her boyfriend. There was no recognition as for her real father is. And for the second still, Cess was of almost on the same position of her mother when she can’t decide on her feelings to Mackie (John Lloyd Cruz) on the latter part of the movie.
Setting: Both happened in their kitchen where I think symbolizes the life of a mother. A mother that loves to cook and take care of her family. It’s also typical as for every mother happened to have kitchen as their sanctuary. It also happened to see that even though Cess has a stable job in Manila Bulletin, their life is still not on the verge of getting well.
Props: The usual props are just the usual Filipino kitchen. Not too great and not that too creepy. And if you could see, both characters hold a bottle of beer that depicts their problems (not really captured on the stills, on Cess, it’s on her right hand, behind her legs; and on her mother, it’s on her left hand). It’s the typical representation of getting rid of our problems, by drinking alcoholic beverages.
Performance: Both Cess and her mother shows the result of parenting. As the daughter sees the struggles of her mother, she’ll be further take care of herself and would neglect the probability of getting involved in love. Not just the problem of love but Cess also faces the pressure of her career as there’s an offer for her in Singapore, a better job and much better salary.
Lighting: On the first still, the area was much darker than the second one. I guess on the first on, it more portrays both struggles of Cess and her mother. For Cess, the ongoing relationship of her and Mackie that would lead to nowhere, and as for her mother, the mishap of her love life. On the second still, it’s lighter for the reason where they (mother and Cess) realize the consequences and the lessons of love.
Cinematography: If you could see, both mother and daughter have the same approach in the kitchen. Both stills are almost the same. On the first one, Cess was the one who caress her mother yet she didn’t give her any advice because personally, she’s afraid to encounter love. While on the second still, it’s now her mother who approached her. From an experienced individual, her mother gave her the lessons and a choice to make. The audience could easily visualize the thought of the mise-en-scene as from the arrangement of characters in the stills.
